INTERVIEW

The Plastic Pollution team had an interview with Maria, who is a member of the Sustainability Team for Carrefour.

We asked her questions, mainly about what Carrefour is doing to reduce plastic, what they were doing to the plastic that is produced in the grocery store and finally why they use plastic in their store.

Maria provided us with a lot of information. She shared that Carrefour are actually fighting against plastic pollution as well and that they are planning to do a beach cleanup in October. Carrefour is doing a lot to help stop plastic pollution. For example, they have removed all plastic from organic fruits and vegetables and have replaced all plastic from the fruit area to paper and compost materials.

A key thing that Maria told us was that not all plastic is bad if you recycle or reuse it. In fact the Carrefour brand only uses recycled materials. It’s because of these actions and many more that Carrefour has reduced 30% of plastic from last year (2019) to this year (2020).

Carrefour has a big box where costumers can leave their plastic as well. Carrefour commits to recycle that plastic. The last thing that we wanted to know was Carrefour’s plan for the future, and they told us that their goal is to eliminate plastic 100% from fruits and vegetables and to eliminate 50% of the plastic from all their supermarkets.

We think that this interview was really informative and it definitely helped us with our project.
